About

Eddie Lenihan, born in 1950, is a renowned Irish author, storyteller, lecturer, and broadcaster. He is one of the few remaining seanchaithe, traditional Irish lore-keepers and tale-spinners. Lenihan has dedicated his life to collecting and preserving Irish folklore, recording stories passed down through generations.

He is particularly famous for his tales of Irish folk heroes, fairies, and other supernatural beings. His work includes not only storytelling but also poetry, historical accounts, and railroad history. Lenihan’s efforts have made him a significant figure in cultural preservation, maintaining the largest private collection of folklore in Ireland. One of his notable acts of conservation activism was in 1999 when he successfully campaigned to save a sacred whitethorn tree, known as the Latoon fairy bush, from being cut down during a road construction project.

Eddie Lenihan

Lenihan is a native of Brosna, County Kerry, Ireland, but currently resides in Crusheen, County Clare. His college education was at Saint Ita’s College in Abbeyfeale, County Limerick and University College in Galway. He is a collector and preservationist of folk tales, recording stories told by older people as passed to them in oral tradition, and then distributing them to a wider audience via print, audio and filmed recordings.

His first local reputation developed as an enthusiastic children’s storyteller. But as his international storytelling reputation grew, he has appeared in the film, The Fairy Faith, in a series of programmes on BBC radio, and at numerous high-profile folk festivals.

“One of the last traditional storytellers - seanchaí in Gaelic - still working in Ireland”
